2013: A new year, a new perspective. Three years and eleven months ago, I would have bet you a million dollars that I would never, ever, no how, no way return to Africa. Yet, here we are, five months out from the chance to work with Watoto Childcare Ministries in Uganda. Our airfare deposit has been paid, our shots have been administered, and we have begun the long process of fundraising $4,500 each. Can it really be happening? When I left Africa the first time in February 2009, I was a shell of who I had been when I first arrived. I was hungry, sick, and my spirit was broken. Twelve days of a particularly nasty parasite had cut my planned semester volunteering with the Chuka Children’s Home into less than two weeks and left me doubting whether I would ever feel the same again. For a month I wandered past my suitcase in the corner of the room and shuddered every time I thought of unpacking and reliving those memories. I would catch a hint of a smell that reminded me of Africa and my heart would ache in pain. I swore there would never be a day when I could see myself returning. Swearing is a funny thing though. What had once seemed rock solid, crumbled into the passing winds as my body, spirit and soul began to heal. I had met incredible people in Kenya and I had seen God’s love and mercy more alive than ever before but the shock was nearly debilitating. How could so many people be so joyful when they didn’t have anything?! I was from the U.S. and my selfish, sheltered spirit fought against a picture of happiness that didn’t include air conditioning, easy access to medical care and a society where children don’t carry machetes down the street. However, as the antibiotics began to kill the parasite that had wrecked such havoc in my life, my attitude began to change as well. Time began to dull the wounds and where I had once been frightened, I now felt more compelled than ever to share Christ’s love. Africa was further ingrained in my spirit and my soul. How can you forget faces that love you with nothing? Hearts that pour themselves out for a sick, weak stranger thousands of miles from home? Bodies that are hungry themselves but will do anything to make a girl on her first trip outside America feel like she’s at home? Over time, that fear of Africa began to fade and was replaced by an even stronger desire to return. For whatever reason Christ may have had – whether for humility or growth or to learn what absolute faith can be – my first trip to East Africa was imperfect. But despite my initial best efforts, it did nothing to quell the ache in my heart for the people that live there. Christ has laid a desire upon my heart to love the people of Africa. With that in mind, everything within me leapt at the chance to return when I heard that Desert Springs would be venturing to Uganda this summer. I knew of Watoto and I have tremendous respect for the work they are doing in an area of the world that is in desperate need of the love of Christ. To care for widows and orphans? I can’t think of anything more in tune with Christ’s heart. And so I prepare to visit Africa once more. I am older, stronger and closer to my Savior.
