Fundraising Event!

Hey fam!

We are so excited to share an incredible opportunity with you. Fundraising to travel with 12 people to a nation half way across the world is challenging, but 100% do-able. 

Summer of 2020 is going to be a busy one for DSBC. The church will be holding its annual Splash Camp, sending students to Summer Camp, as well as some of our students and young adults to Costa Rica and Uganda. It’s going to be a busy one and such a growing and joyful one. 

Both teams (Uganda and Costa Rica) have been asked how people can help. Here’s where part of the answer lies. We are hosting a church rummage sale/ garage sale, and we need your stuff. The stuff that has been lying in the garage destined for Goodwill for months, bring it on over. The stuff you needed the extra motivation to get rid of, here it is. We want it all. 

So what are the details? Look no further.

On the off chance there are items left over, they will be donated to Christian Family Care Thrift, which helps provide adoption, foster care and counseling services for families in our community.

And now comes the hard part — fundraising

I’m no stranger to short-term mission trips. A few years back I used to visit Rocky Point on weekend mission trips. I have been on these trips between 25-30 times. I also had the pleasure of volunteering there during a week-long Vacation Bible School two summers in a row. However, a few years back those trips just abruptly stopped for me. I cannot pinpoint any one reason why, but a number of circumstances prevented me from being able to go anymore. I have always felt a strong call to missions work though, so when the opportunity to go to Uganda came up, I was immediately on board. Let me tell you a little secret about myself: I don’t like the unknown. I guess somewhere there are people who like surprise parties or spontaneous outings on Friday nights…I am not one of them. I have many stereotypical “first child” traits. I like to know what’s going on, to plan, to be in control. For me, the decision to go to Uganda was an easy one, and now comes the hard part — fundraising. Raising $4,500 is no small feat. One of the things impressed upon me early on was that fundraising was going to be a complete work of faith. All control flies out the window. I have sent my letters to friends and family and now I am forced to wait. Wait? Really? Have I mentioned that I’m also impatient? But to be serious, this is the part where I am forced to relinquish control. I can’t control how people respond to the letters, and I certainly can’t force people to donate money to me. I mean, I could try but it would be rude and I’d probably end up with more restraining orders than donations. Typically when I tell people I’m taking a trip to Africa, they respond by telling me any fears they would have in my shoes; fears about shots and disease and lions. I’ve never worried about any of those. Diseases and lions are all very real things, but I trust that God is in control of my future and I could just as easily encounter any of those here…well maybe except the lion. But instead I worry I won’t be able to raise the funds to go. So for me, this article is less a way for me to tell you a bit about the trip, and more a form of prayer and praise. I trust that God will provide the money for me to take this trip. You may not believe that after what you just read, but it’s true: I trust Him. My heart may not always believe it to be so, and I might not always feel like things will work out, but I know that they will. My heart and my feelings hold no bearing to the truth. We are told that God works all things for good to those who love Him and are called to His purpose. I feel that I am called to take this trip, so I trust that He will care and provide for me like he does for the birds of the air and the lilies of the field. – Megan H.

Not a Missionary

Not a Missionary I’ve spent the entirety of my Christian life attempting to convince myself that I’m not a missionary. There are these amazing people who are willing to leave everything behind and travel to places far outside of their comfort zone to share the love of Jesus is one fashion or another. I am not one of these people. You see, I love modern civilization. I’m addicted to the Internet and never go anywhere without my iPhone. I also happen to think that a sturdy house, electricity and a comfortable bed are among the best things in life. Leave it all behind? No thank you. Ideally, I like to stay within ten miles of an Apple Store at all times. Love Thy Neighbor Surely, Jesus doesn’t call all of us to be worldwide missionaries. After all, we need people in the U.S. to show the love of Christ to our local neighbors. I volunteer at church regularly and love taking part in local community outreaches. I can help others and stay where I belong, in Phoenix. I’m all set. Me and Jesus, we’re good. The problem is, Jesus doesn’t seem to agree with that argument and keeps changing the game. Several years ago I was presented with an opportunity to take part in a few Desert Springs home-building projects in Mexico. I initially turned down the opportunity, but a man named Bert Hunt eventually convinced me to give it a shot. I left my Mac behind, grabbed a Bible and set off to my first official “missionary” trip. I was by no means accepting that title, just checking out the situation. A Puzzle That I Can’t Solve I grew up in a home where we often had to choose between paying utility bills and buying food, so I thought I understood what it was like to be “poor.” I knew things would be pretty rough in Mexico, but I wasn’t prepared for what I found. Less than ten hours from my home I was faced with poverty at a level that I had never seen. I found entire families living in the dirt with little more than a tarp over their heads. The modest shelter that we built for one family in a single day wouldn’t have been good enough to serve as a toolshed in my own back yard, but it brought tears to the eyes of a mother who now had a “home” for her children. I suppose that the proper response to this situation was to give my heart to these people and return every weekend to do all that I could to help. Unfortunately, I’m wired a little differently. After my second trip, my bleeding heart turned into frustration. As it turns out, I’m not any good at building houses. What I really wanted to do was assess and fix the situation. I’m a problem solver by nature and here I was faced with a problem far too vast for me to even comprehend. These children are born into poverty, raised with just enough food to survive and granted meager wages as teenagers and adults that only serve to restart the cycle. I couldn’t “fix” this one small city in Mexico, and that made me mad. So I gave up. I returned to Phoenix and reassumed my role as the man on the home front. You guys keep up the solid missionary work in other countries, I’ll stick to small local projects that make me feel like I’ve succeeded. Africa? I’ll Pass Fast forward almost a decade and I’m presented with another impossible situation. This time I’m being asked to travel all the way to Africa to aid those that have been widowed and orphaned due to unspeakable and unwarranted violence. This time I’m not being asked to give up a weekend, but two entire weeks. Yet again, Desert Springs is embarking on a journey to aid in construction efforts in a foreign country and yet again, Jesus sends a man of God (Caleb Campbell this time) to tell me that I should go. I kindly declined. No thanks, I’ll hold down the fort here, maybe even give you a few bucks to help you out. Just don’t expect me to join up. A Way to Help A week passed and my opinion hadn’t changed. Then one day I picked up another of my favorite electronic toys and a thought implanted itself into my brain. As a professional photographer, I use my camera to tell stories. The story of a man following the example of Christ and taking a beloved bride. The story of a couple who want to share how they mirrored their creator by themselves creating a beautiful little baby. What if I could tell the story of Desert Springs’ journey to Uganda? When I swing a hammer, you can bet that nothing good will result, but maybe that doesn’t mean that I’m incapable of making a difference. What if a trip to Uganda isn’t only about building a house or a school? What if it’s about changing lives? Of course, the lives of the people who will use that structure, but it goes further. What if I could help document the life-changing moments of the people on the trip? What if I could bring home photos and video that forever change someone at Desert Springs who lacks only a slight nudge to heed the call that God has placed on their lives? What if one of the best ways to serve the people at home was to show them the situation in Africa? This was a world-shattering revelation. Did I fight it? You bet! I’d still have to try to raise more money than what I deem to be realistically possible, then skip work for two weeks, fly to the other side of the planet and face things that I know will break my heart into a million pieces. Not exactly my ideal trip. A Godly Wife A few days after my big revelation, I was still fighting the ideas that God had placed on my heart. It’s so much easier to stay. It’s so much easier to not beg my friends and family for help funding a journey that I wasn’t even initially convinced was worth the expense. One day, as we were driving home from church, my wife, whose heart is exponentially bigger than my own, gave an audible voice to the silent suggestion that I had been fighting from God. “I think we should go to Uganda.” This is why God sees fit to partner people up for life. When I’m fighting a weakness, Kelley is my strength. What could I say? I knew that she was right. Without a word of rationalization or argumentation, without bringing up that it would be too expensive, too time consuming, too difficult, I said the only thing that I could, “yep.” Sacrificial Love So here I am, a prideful tech blogger turned humble beggar as I reach out to anyone who will listen and tell them about what we’d like to accomplish in Africa and how much help we need to get the job done. Am I a missionary now? I’m still not sure that the title feels right, but I do know that, paradoxically, stepping outside of my comfort does feel right. I’ve come to realize that we’re called to love others, not just in the way that’s easy, but sacrificially. As followers of Christ, we all have a mission field, whether it’s thousands of miles away or simply the house next door. Regardless, if your mission to help your fellow man doesn’t push the bounds of your comfort or challenge the way that you live, I’m not sure you’re doing it right. -Josh

2013: A new year, a new perspective. Three years and eleven months ago, I would have bet you a million dollars that I would never, ever, no how, no way return to Africa. Yet, here we are, five months out from the chance to work with Watoto Childcare Ministries in Uganda. Our airfare deposit has been paid, our shots have been administered, and we have begun the long process of fundraising $4,500 each. Can it really be happening? When I left Africa the first time in February 2009, I was a shell of who I had been when I first arrived. I was hungry, sick, and my spirit was broken. Twelve days of a particularly nasty parasite had cut my planned semester volunteering with the Chuka Children’s Home into less than two weeks and left me doubting whether I would ever feel the same again. For a month I wandered past my suitcase in the corner of the room and shuddered every time I thought of unpacking and reliving those memories. I would catch a hint of a smell that reminded me of Africa and my heart would ache in pain. I swore there would never be a day when I could see myself returning. Swearing is a funny thing though. What had once seemed rock solid, crumbled into the passing winds as my body, spirit and soul began to heal. I had met incredible people in Kenya and I had seen God’s love and mercy more alive than ever before but the shock was nearly debilitating. How could so many people be so joyful when they didn’t have anything?! I was from the U.S. and my selfish, sheltered spirit fought against a picture of happiness that didn’t include air conditioning, easy access to medical care and a society where children don’t carry machetes down the street. However, as the antibiotics began to kill the parasite that had wrecked such havoc in my life, my attitude began to change as well. Time began to dull the wounds and where I had once been frightened, I now felt more compelled than ever to share Christ’s love. Africa was further ingrained in my spirit and my soul. How can you forget faces that love you with nothing? Hearts that pour themselves out for a sick, weak stranger thousands of miles from home? Bodies that are hungry themselves but will do anything to make a girl on her first trip outside America feel like she’s at home? Over time, that fear of Africa began to fade and was replaced by an even stronger desire to return. For whatever reason Christ may have had – whether for humility or growth or to learn what absolute faith can be – my first trip to East Africa was imperfect. But despite my initial best efforts, it did nothing to quell the ache in my heart for the people that live there. Christ has laid a desire upon my heart to love the people of Africa. With that in mind, everything within me leapt at the chance to return when I heard that Desert Springs would be venturing to Uganda this summer. I knew of Watoto and I have tremendous respect for the work they are doing in an area of the world that is in desperate need of the love of Christ. To care for widows and orphans? I can’t tell you exactly when I had this revelation, but I know it started in my childhood and has been slowly stirring in me ever since.  Maybe it was when I was a little girl watching Sally Struthers beg for a dollar a day, as photos of malnourished African children flashed across my television screen.  Or, perhaps, it was growing up in the South, where stories of slavery hit so close to home.  In reality, it could’ve been something as simple as seeing Simba tromp through the African terrain in the Lion King.  I’m not sure.  All I know is that for decades, I’ve been drawn to this majestic country that, for me, is the definition of pain and triumph.

I went on my first mission trip in middle school, and a seed was planted within my heart.  We traveled from my home in Jackson, Miss., to a small, not-so-safe neighborhood in Memphis, Tenn.  The purpose of our trip was to repaint houses in the area that were long overdue for a new façade.  The houses were structurally sound, but we wanted to do something to lift this particular community’s spirits and a fresh coat of paint was our plan.  I had been scraping off old paint for about half a day when I noticed a little boy and a little girl playing together in the yard next door.  Something told me to stop what I was doing and go talk to them.  I spent the rest of the week, not scraping and painting like I was supposed to, but sitting with these kids, learning about them, singing songs and giving them the attention they deserved but couldn’t get at home.

On the last day of the trip when it was time for my group to leave, I cried as I hugged them both.  The little boy handed me a carefully folded, triangular-shaped piece of paper with my name written on the outside.  On the inside, scrawled in his sweet little boy handwriting, were the words “I love you”.

I still have that piece of paper.

I pull it out from time to time, and I’m reminded that instead of spending my time making the outside of those houses look better, God wanted to use me to impact those children on the inside.

I was meant to listen to the urging of the Spirit and show those babies how much Jesus loves us by loving on them and making them feel like they were important, too.

At this point, you might be asking yourself what in the world this has to do with me going to Africa.  Well, when I lived in Arizona and attended Desert Springs, I frequently went on mission trips to Mexico with a group from the church.  I’ve since moved back to Alabama and haven’t done any mission work since.  A few months ago I discovered that Desert Springs was traveling to Uganda, and a spark went off inside me.  I mentioned it to a few close friends and family members and began to pray about it.  Knowing how important this was to me and my spiritual growth, the enemy immediately set out to change my mind.  He whispered things like, “You don’t live in Arizona anymore, and there’s no way you’ll get that much time off work.”  And, “You hate asking people for money. Just let it go.”  He made the laundry list of trip preparations seem almost impossible.  But, I know my Jesus better than that.  If He who makes ALL things possible wants me in Africa, He’ll find a way to get me there.  He’s already provided for me in so many ways.  And I know that spending my time and energy focusing on getting to Uganda and letting even just one child know how important he is and how much Jesus loves him, it will be worth it.
