Not a Missionary I’ve spent the entirety of my Christian life attempting to convince myself that I’m not a missionary. There are these amazing people who are willing to leave everything behind and travel to places far outside of their comfort zone to share the love of Jesus is one fashion or another. I am not one of these people. You see, I love modern civilization. I’m addicted to the Internet and never go anywhere without my iPhone. I also happen to think that a sturdy house, electricity and a comfortable bed are among the best things in life. Leave it all behind? No thank you. Ideally, I like to stay within ten miles of an Apple Store at all times. Love Thy Neighbor Surely, Jesus doesn’t call all of us to be worldwide missionaries. After all, we need people in the U.S. to show the love of Christ to our local neighbors. I volunteer at church regularly and love taking part in local community outreaches. I can help others and stay where I belong, in Phoenix. I’m all set. Me and Jesus, we’re good. The problem is, Jesus doesn’t seem to agree with that argument and keeps changing the game. Several years ago I was presented with an opportunity to take part in a few Desert Springs home-building projects in Mexico. I initially turned down the opportunity, but a man named Bert Hunt eventually convinced me to give it a shot. I left my Mac behind, grabbed a Bible and set off to my first official “missionary” trip. I was by no means accepting that title, just checking out the situation. A Puzzle That I Can’t Solve I grew up in a home where we often had to choose between paying utility bills and buying food, so I thought I understood what it was like to be “poor.” I knew things would be pretty rough in Mexico, but I wasn’t prepared for what I found. Less than ten hours from my home I was faced with poverty at a level that I had never seen. I found entire families living in the dirt with little more than a tarp over their heads. The modest shelter that we built for one family in a single day wouldn’t have been good enough to serve as a toolshed in my own back yard, but it brought tears to the eyes of a mother who now had a “home” for her children. I suppose that the proper response to this situation was to give my heart to these people and return every weekend to do all that I could to help. Unfortunately, I’m wired a little differently. After my second trip, my bleeding heart turned into frustration. As it turns out, I’m not any good at building houses. What I really wanted to do was assess and fix the situation. I’m a problem solver by nature and here I was faced with a problem far too vast for me to even comprehend. These children are born into poverty, raised with just enough food to survive and granted meager wages as teenagers and adults that only serve to restart the cycle. I couldn’t “fix” this one small city in Mexico, and that made me mad. So I gave up. I returned to Phoenix and reassumed my role as the man on the home front. You guys keep up the solid missionary work in other countries, I’ll stick to small local projects that make me feel like I’ve succeeded. Africa? I’ll Pass Fast forward almost a decade and I’m presented with another impossible situation. This time I’m being asked to travel all the way to Africa to aid those that have been widowed and orphaned due to unspeakable and unwarranted violence. This time I’m not being asked to give up a weekend, but two entire weeks. Yet again, Desert Springs is embarking on a journey to aid in construction efforts in a foreign country and yet again, Jesus sends a man of God (Caleb Campbell this time) to tell me that I should go. I kindly declined. No thanks, I’ll hold down the fort here, maybe even give you a few bucks to help you out. Just don’t expect me to join up. A Way to Help A week passed and my opinion hadn’t changed. Then one day I picked up another of my favorite electronic toys and a thought implanted itself into my brain. As a professional photographer, I use my camera to tell stories. The story of a man following the example of Christ and taking a beloved bride. The story of a couple who want to share how they mirrored their creator by themselves creating a beautiful little baby. What if I could tell the story of Desert Springs’ journey to Uganda? When I swing a hammer, you can bet that nothing good will result, but maybe that doesn’t mean that I’m incapable of making a difference. What if a trip to Uganda isn’t only about building a house or a school? What if it’s about changing lives? Of course, the lives of the people who will use that structure, but it goes further. What if I could help document the life-changing moments of the people on the trip? What if I could bring home photos and video that forever change someone at Desert Springs who lacks only a slight nudge to heed the call that God has placed on their lives? What if one of the best ways to serve the people at home was to show them the situation in Africa? This was a world-shattering revelation. Did I fight it? You bet! I’d still have to try to raise more money than what I deem to be realistically possible, then skip work for two weeks, fly to the other side of the planet and face things that I know will break my heart into a million pieces. Not exactly my ideal trip. A Godly Wife A few days after my big revelation, I was still fighting the ideas that God had placed on my heart. It’s so much easier to stay. It’s so much easier to not beg my friends and family for help funding a journey that I wasn’t even initially convinced was worth the expense. One day, as we were driving home from church, my wife, whose heart is exponentially bigger than my own, gave an audible voice to the silent suggestion that I had been fighting from God. “I think we should go to Uganda.” This is why God sees fit to partner people up for life. When I’m fighting a weakness, Kelley is my strength. What could I say? I knew that she was right.
